Homemade Clay Mask

Clay mask ingredientsPeople have used clay masks for thousands of years to help clear pores, slough off the dead outer layer of skin and soothe and calm inflammation. It's really very simple to make at home and you can get the clay at a natural foods store.

In this recipe, the lactic acid in the milk (alpha hydroxy acid) helps slough off dead skin cells, the clay helps to clear out your pores and the honey helps to soothe.

3 - 4 tablespoons whole milk
2 tablespoons clay (Green or French Clay and White Kaolin are good choices)
1 teaspoon honey
4 drops essential oils (optional)

Clay and aspirin maskMix the ingredients together adding more milk or water if the mask is too dry. Apply evenly to face (and neck if you want) avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 15 minutes or until dry and rinse off with warm water. I usually wash my face following a mask just to ensure that I've removed all of it.

Now, my favorite facial mask is an aspirin scrub that I use in conjunction with a clay mask. This works well only if you have oily skin that is not sensitive. Essentially, the salicylic acid in the aspirin works like any commercial product in helping clear out your pores.

What I end up doing is dissolving about 3 uncoated aspirins in a very small amount of water and mixing it into the clay mask. It acts as a scrub when you put on the mask. Leave it on for the same amount of time and there you have it! Clear skin.

This is terrific! I like your new site. I am going to try this home-made mask myself. What part of Whole foods would carry the clay?

One issue of importance, to me at least, is the use of fragrances in organic beauty supplies. I have terrible allergies, and most of the organic things have a lot of fragrence. Another issue is certain plants that I am allergic to. I have had some things make my face swell up and get what looks like really ugly acne, but is actually some sort of blistering thing with the immune reaction. So, it would be really nice if I could make some of my own things and skip the essential oil (or use a fruit one, fruit scents don't usually bother me).

Oh yea, the packaging. I find it ironic that a lot of organic products are packaged in non-recylable materials (e.g., squeeze tubes, which are made of two or more layes of different plasticized plastics), or packaging that can't be taken appart, so that you could at least recycle a portion of the packaging. It would be nice to go back to glass jars and metal squeeze tubes (e.g., old fashioned tooth paste tubes).

Cheers!

I'm not sure where you would find it in Whole Foods... the natural beauty section? I can't stand many fragrances either - they give me headaches.

And, the packaging thing is really ridiculous, no? Although I must admit I hate, hate, hate metal squeeze tubes. I can't get the stuff out (hard to squeeze), oftentimes they break open and you can't get all the product out. Maybe someone can invent better metal squeeze tubes.

Awesome! How often should one do this?

You can use it once a week. If you find that it dries out your skin, you might alternate with something else - like a honey, brown sugar scrub that is more moisturizing than drying.

If you're considering purchasing the designer dress, one of the first things that you must decide on is exactly where to purchase them online
